My name is Reuben Miller

I grew up in South Africa, and later lived in Israel, the UK, and New York. I paint acrylic works in an expressive realism style, covering themes including Judaica & Jewish themes, as well as contemporary life and scenic works.

A question I get asked a lot is, "why acrylic?". Learn more about my unique process that turns only four pigments, white and transparent medium into millions of colors, and why I prefer to paint in acrylic instead of oil.

Latest works by Reuben Miller

New works include portraits of contemporary Gedolim, scenes from modern Israel, and paintings exploring present-day Jewish life. These pieces join an expanding collection of rabbinic portraits and Jerusalem landscapes. Recent additions feature studies of daily life in Israel's cities and neighborhoods, alongside formal portraits that document today's Jewish leadership. Each work continues an artistic documentation of Jewish continuity through realistic painting. Some works may be sold.

When I was a kid I had this terrible habit of opening up electronics and trying to take them apart. I once did it to my dad’s stereo. Unfortunately I couldn’t put it back together. It wasn’t that I was being destructive. I was curious.
I collected wires and dc motors and low voltage lamps. Along with my brothers we used to try to make stuff. Didn’t get too far though. The coolest thing I remember we made was a spinning art piece. We attached a round piece of cardboard to the motor and had it spin. We then hit it with markers. Pretty lame in hindsight, but to us it was so cool! We dreamt up ideas of what we could make. That was part of my everyday, the dreaming, that is. ADHD to the max. I built tons of unbuildable stuff. I hoped one day to have a workshop like the one in Back to The Future where those dreams would come true.
The Tinkerer is kind of my salute to that little boy who in my imagination never grew up nor tired of dreaming.

This is a portrait of an anonymous Israeli soldier. He represents the young boys and girls, literally still teenagers, who with massive courage and bravery walk into harms way to protect their fellow citizen and defend good over evil. They are fighters for what is just and noble. They are putting their lives on the line to make sure October 7 never happens again.

[UPDATE] This is Tamar Chaya Torpiashvili OBM (תמר חיה בת מינה), a 9-old girl from the city of Ashdod. During an air raid siren while her family was rushing down into the bomb shelter, she suffered a heart attack. She tragically passed away a week later.

As the reality of the last few weeks since October 7th set in, I was left wondering what I could do, or what I should do. Painting became difficult. The beautiful young, innocent faces of children and adults and elderly were like an apparition before my mind’s eye as the days wore on. Each one is a world to their family, each loss devastating - a loss unimaginable. Somehow Tamar’s sweet, open gaze with such innocence struck my heart. I am a parent, too. How must her parents feel?

Tamar Chaya is the most important loss we had. Each of the thousands we lost is the most important loss we had. How can one choose… she remains for me a symbol of our hope as the Jewish people that Hashem (G-d) will always be with us and our tears will be consoled finally, finally - may we witness that consolation imminently.

What's prettier than a painting of a classic flower arrangement? Plopping a peacock onto the flower arrangement. This is my first reveal of a painting where I've combined reality and AI-generated concepts.

For all those bemoaning AI as a threat to creativity, I tend to disagree. AI is a fantastic tool, that when understood and harnessed correctly, can actually bring new dimensions to your work and make it more potent and inspiring. You can't just spit something out of AI software and run with it. Getting the right image takes A LOT tweaking, post-production work and careful thought. It's similar to photography, where it can take hundreds of shots before you get that perfect one, plus the expected post-production adjustments. The way I work is I think of a theory and vision for a concept. I generate many images, regenerating over and over many times with minutely-tweaked command prompts, shifting the lighting, changing the aspect ratio, etc. This is before I go into Adobe Photoshop to adjust further to get it to a place where it can establish the foundation before I reference it for a painting.

Of all the AI platforms I’ve tried I find @mid.journey to be superior in capturing a vision, while leaving room for the imagination to spark further creative visionary ideas. I believe AI is an incredible tool to inspire, not stifle, art.

Q: What tools do you use? A: I use a lot of paintbrushes. Or, abuse a lot of paintbrushes, is probably more accurate. I've tried to be kind to them and treat them like gems. I purchased some expensive delicate brushes that artists rave about, but in the end I am just too clumsy, brutish and forgetful to keep them in good condition. I prefer to buy cheaper ones in bulk, because I work them hard, beat them up and then toss them. What tools do you use, and how do you use them?

@shmully is a fantastic street photographer, capturing portraits of people doing everyday things on the streets of Brooklyn. Although it’s mostly of hasidim, he does manage to capture the wide demographic that makes up this very vibrant corner of the world. This particular image spoke to me as it very much represents the essence of living in the crazy topsy-turvy world that is New York, and very much represents America at its finest. Having traveled to many countries around the world, I can appreciate the freedoms that we sometimes (maybe most of the time) take for granted here in the US. Regardless of religion we are free of persecution. You can practice it when, where and how you want. Need to run a business to provide for your family, and still remain open, yet need to pray? No problem. Just put up a sign. By now it’s just part of the fabric of America.

I am reminded on this day how fortunate we are to have a country like the United States, where freedom is at the core. While all European countries were oppressing, harassing, expelling and murdering Jews, America opened its shores to all who wished to live. Jews were finally able to be equal citizen of a nation. We are currently living through tumultuous times, but in the vast perspective that is history we will be able to overcome even this.

Flashback to the summer of 2021, when I was only 6 months into my shift in career towards full-time art. Instagram is always full of photographic inspiration, and along the way I discovered the fantastic photographer, Marcel Siebert (@_marcelsiebert). He has an incredible way of capturing nature in its lush, textural beauty. I was so inspired by his work that I messaged him to find out if he would allow me to use his brilliant photos for my paintings. He said yes. I finally completed a painting of this 'incognito cat' based on one of my favorite photos by Marcel. Even as the feline friend blends in almost seamlessly, she still manages to stand out immediately.
